Happy Halloween!

Halloween, Oct. 31, the eve of All Saints' Day, observed with traditional games and customs. The word comes from medieval England's All Hallows' eve (Old Eng. hallow = "saint"). However, many of these customs predate Christianity, going back to Celtic practices associated with Nov. 1, which was Samhain , the beginning of winter and the Celtic new year. Witches and other evil spirits were believed to roam the earth on this evening, playing tricks on human beings to mark the season of diminishing sunlight. Bonfires were lit, offerings were made of dainty foods and sweets, and people would disguise themselves as one of the roaming spirits, to avoid demonic persecution. Survivals of these early practices can be found in countries of Celtic influence today, such as the United States where children go from door to door in costumes demanding "trick or treat."

27-28 June 2011Trondheym (Norway)- a joint project between the Russian and Norwegian- Industry Energy (IE) and ROGWU held a seminar on the issue of evacuation and rescue from oil and gas platforms in the Arctic.

The seminar was attended by Norwegian and Russian experts in the field of industrial safety, as well as representatives of two unions, co-ordinating this work. During the workshop, participants visited the training center, experimental workshops, listened to expert opinion, discussed ways and means of evacuation in the development of Prirazlomnoye and Shtokman fields. It turned out there are a number of gaps in Russian legislation, in particular, the lack of clear technical and technological requirements to ensure the safety of staff when changing rigs by helicopters. In addition, this analysis of meteorological data for several years, demonstrated the complexity of the rescue operations under frequently changing complex meteorological conditions in the Arctic. After the workshop report will be prepared in light of identified problems, which later enters the final documents of the joint project
